This qualification is aimed at individuals wishing to become a paediatric first-aider in the workplace with a responsibility for the welfare of infants and children. This qualification is intended for learners already working or preparing to work in the industry and it meets the requirements for paediatric first aid outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (RQF).

Learners are required to be 16 years of age prior to certification. It is also advised that learners have a minimum of level 1 in literacy to enable them to complete the assessment.

Learners will become familiar with the role of the paediatric first aider and be able to assess and react appropriately to an emergency situation, such as a child or an infant who is unresponsive, has an airway obstruction, has breathing difficulties or is suffering from shock or anaphylaxis. Topics also included are fractures, dislocations, injuries to the head, neck, back, eyes, ears or nose, poisoning, bites or stings, burns or scalds, electric shock, minor injuries and chronic medical conditions.

This qualification is assessed by practical observation and written questions. 1] Practical observation The practical assessment is completed throughout the course delivery. Learners must demonstrate practical first aid skills, as outlined within the HABC assessment pack. 2] Written questions Learners must answer a series of questions, as outlined within the HABC theory assessment pack. The assessor may undertake additional oral questioning to extract further information from learners if they have not demonstrated the required standard through written questions alone. These responses should be documented and stored with the theory assessment pack for each learner.
